Short Putting Is All Or Nothing

I love short putting. No other shot in golf is like it. You must hit a specific target at a certain speed to be successful. And if you fail, there are no second chances and no recovery. You add one to your score and (hopefully) tap in.

It is the all or nothingness of short putting that can cause problems mentally. Every golfer has to face the fear of missing a putt at one time or another. But those who make short putts under pressure are the ones who can put aside the fear of missing and get focused on what is required to make the putt. Simply put, how hard to hit it and on what line.

When you get closer to the hole, the entire nature of the game changes. You are no longer playing golf. In golf, hitting a general area is acceptable. Fairways have literally millions of different spots the ball can land in and still be in good shape. The average green has hundreds of thousands of different spots the ball can stop on and still be on the green. Even the three foot chipping circle that is recommended has hundreds of different spots the ball can stop on and still be within the three foot area.

Golf is a sport in which your goal is to hit the ball in a general area. It requires a certain amount of physical skill and coordination to get that job done.

However, when you get inside of about ten feet the number of acceptable stopping points becomes one. You are no longer playing golf. You must hit a very specific spot at a specific speed.

That makes short putting a target game, as simple as throwing darts or hitting a pool shot. It requires no special physical ability and is well within the reach of average golfer to achieve professional results.

Short putting is all or nothing. If you can focus on the right speed and line you will get it all, but if you focus on technique you will get nothing.
