The 3 Steps To Short Putting Success

Short putting is the most important part of golf. It separates the winners from the losers. A miss cannot be recovered from.

A missed short putt cost you one stroke every time. You may be able to recover from a bad drive or a less than great iron shot. There is no such luxury on a short putt. That is what leads a lot of people to make them more difficult than they need to be.

Here are three things you can do to make short putting easier

1) Focus on speed - in putting, speed is king. Most short putts miss because of speed. Either they are hit too hard to take the break, or to soft to hold the line. It is imperative that you have full confidence in your chosen speed.

2) Focus on line - after you have a good feel for the speed of the putt, you can then asses the line you are going to hit the ball on. You must also be fully confident in the line you have chosen. To improve your focus on the line, try looking at a few blades of grass in front of the ball that you expect it will roll over.

3) Make a natural putting stroke - golfers are entirely too technical about the putting stroke. Your body does just fine in such pursuits as throwing a baseball or hitting a pool shot. Short putting is no less a target game. Conventional putting instruction doesn't address this fact, but you should.

If you think back to your best putting days, you will see how little you thought about your putting technique. You had inordinate feel for the speed and saw nothing but the line to the hole.

If you are properly focused and confident in your line and speed, odds are the natural putting stroke will happen without your assistance.
