Don't forget to have fun!

Golf tips come in all sizes and shapes. Some work wonders for you, others fail miserably. Most golfers are on an endless journey looking for the secret to golf.

While this is not all bad, experience has shown that if you focus too much on your swing or your score you invariably forget to have fun.

I recently played with a guy who was maybe a 25 handicapper on a good day. He got club throwing mad on just about every shot. On one hole he threw his club over a barbed wire fence. His friends retrieved the club for him.

He didn't have five minutes of fun the whole day. I wondered why he even bothered to show up and fork out the 35 bucks to inflict such torture on himself.

Golf is just a game for most of us. Even the scratch golfer at your course doesn't have a chance of making a nickel off the game.

Next time you get out to the golf course, forget about your score and your swing. Enjoy the day away from your normal stress.

In the end, is it better to have shot an enjoyable and relaxing 80 or a frustrating and maddening 75?

Accept that you will hit more than your fair share of bad shots. It is impossible for the average weekend golfer to develop a swing that will function properly on every shot.

So next time you get up to the first tee, give yourself permission to enjoy the four hours that follow. Make having fun the top priority. Learn to laugh at your less than good shots. By doing so you will hit fewer of them.

Most likely, you will see your scores improve by thinking less about them and more about enjoying yourself on the golf course.
